Anatomy of Melancholy, 269-271 — Pt. I, Sec. 2, Mem. III, Subsect. 8 — Emulation, Hatred, Faction, Desire of Revenge, Causes (a THIRD illustration)

Out of this root of envy spring those feral branches of faction, hatred, livor, emulation, which cause the like grievances, and are, serrae animae, the saws of the soul, consternationis pleni affectus, affections full of desperate amazement; or as Cyprian describes emulation, it is “a moth of the soul, a consumption, to make another man’s happiness his misery, to torture, crucify, and execute himself, to eat his own heart. Meat and drink can do such men no good, they do always grieve, sigh, and groan, day and night without intermission, their breast is torn asunder.”

Yup, a third picture for this subsection, and a second for this exact quote. I might be stuck in a rut of some kind.

On another note, if you didn’t see it on Instagram or Facebook, I started a Threadless shop. If you don’t know what Threadless is, it is a user-friendly website through which artists can sell their images printed on t-shirts, mugs, etc. Profits are slim. However it is print on demand, which makes it a decent enough way for artists to sell a variety of items and designs without having pay upfront for five boxes of a single t-shirt design that might not ever sell.

If you are able to buy something, or even just share the link on social media, it is a HUGE help. I’ve been doing some soul-searching recently (plus some accounting) and to be frank… It’s possible that I should be devoting my time to something more profitable. Like starting a cult. I probably lack the charisma for that though. I lean a bit mores splenetic than magnetic. Well anyhow – all purchases, social media shout-outs, and encouraging things said online and in person – really do help me keep the new work coming.

This post is part of a long, tedious, and very illustrated read-along of Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy. More info here and follow along on Facebook here. Illustrations posted via devon_isadevon on Instagram.
