The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, Psychology:
“This phenomenon occurs when the thing you’ve just noticed, experienced or been told about suddenly crops up constantly. It gives you the feeling that out of nowhere, pretty much everyone and their cousin are talking about the subject — or that it is swiftly surrounding you. And you’re not crazy; you are totally seeing it more. But the thing is, of course, that’s because you’re noticing it more.” (Kate Kershner, www.stuffyoushouldknow.com)
I love this one. All humans have pattern-loving brains, which is why we see things like coincidences as overly meaningful. My brain really, super adores patterns, so yeah, I get Baader-Meinhoffed a lot.
Are you highly learn-ed in specialized knowledge? Are you now, or have you ever been, a graduate student or professor? Do you read dense theoretical texts for fun? Send your favorite theories to devonisadevon@gmail.com, and I will draw them. Esoteric terminology also accepted but will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
